Five Things You Should Do Before Moving Day

Whether you are renting or you have just bought your dream home, moving day can be stressful. With so many different things to organise on the day, important aspects can often be forgotten about. Sorting out these five simple steps before you arrive in your new home, will help to make moving in a lot easier.

Measurements

The first thing you should do is arrange with your Estate Agent to go and check out the measurements of your new property. Pay particular attention to door frames, hallways and turns in stairwells, because there is nothing worse than your brand new furniture struggling to get through the door. If you need new beds, sofas and other large furniture you would ideally like it to arrive at the same time you do, so ensure you that you have all of your measurements prepared before you move in.

Broadband

Broadband is also something you should ensure you leave enough time to sort out, because who can live without a good internet connection? No one wants to spend the first few days in their dream home fixing the Wi-Fi, so arranging this in advance will allow you to relax. Whether you’re sticking with your current supplier or shopping around for a better deal, you will need to give them a notice period of 30 days when you move to a new house, so this should be something that you arrange as early as possible.

Parking permits & suspensions

Imagine pulling up to your new home on moving day and not having a space to park, or worse, getting a parking ticket. Research whether your new area requires a permit before anything else to ensure that this doesn’t happen to you.

You may need to apply for a parking bay to make sure you have a guaranteed space outside on your moving day. Bearing in mind that this could take 10 working days for the relevant local authority to process parking applications, make sure you leave plenty of time for this to be authorised.

Cleaners

No one wants to move into a messy home. Making sure that your house is clean before you take up residence will make your moving day much easier and a little less cluttered. Whether you are cleaning yourself or arranging for outside help, be sure to arrange this before all of your belongings take over the property.

Postal Redirection

Sign up to the Royal Mail's redirection service to ensure you don’t miss any important post. Make sure that all of your letters are sent to your new address and not being placed in the hands of somebody else. The cost of this starts from £33.99 (costs may vary) and you can apply for stints of 3,6 or 12 months. It may take up to five working days to set this up, so get this ready for the day you move.
